Teacher Appreciation - Dynamite Teachers!

Well, I don't know where my head has been...
I say that because, apparently, last week was Teacher Appreciation Week.
Well, it came and went and didn't knock on my door, so I missed it.
I need to stop and get around to all of your blogs, and then I might have had a heads up...
So, since it is AuBrynne's last week of school, I thought I would do a few things for her teachers THIS week.

First up, a cute one.
Dynamite Rolo Treats.
I took the Rolos that are in rolls and covered them with red paper.
A little white rope and some hot glue and they were nearly ready.
A little label that says
Ms. [Teacher], You are DYNAMITE! Have a Treat!

Story Time

One of our favorite parts of the day is story time.
Some days I read to AuBrynne from books.
Some days AuBrynne reads to me from books.
Some days we make up fairy-tales.
AuBrynne's favorite is telling me her favorite story.
Right now that happens to be the story of Rapunzel.
Last night I grabbed the camera and clicked away as she told me the story of Rapunzel.
And for the first time Rapunzel had curls instead of straight hair... this made me happy.

The story can't be told without sufficient hand waving, as we are Chicagoans...

I love this baby!

Sakura Spring Dress

A while back, eons ago in blogger-time, my dear friend Holly over at 504Main held a little giveaway.
She was giving away Silhouette products.
She had shown projects she had done without the cutter but with the products.
They were WAY cool.
You should check out her blog, 504Main to see them!
Well, I have been sitting on the products for a while, contemplating just what to do with them.
Then, I was lucky enough to get a Silhouette and have been singing along with it...
(if you have one, you know it sings, right?)
Then I decided that I really need to try this Heat Transfer Material.
It was in yellow, which is a hard color for me to work with.
It's just not in my general color palette, you know?
Well, I had one of those "Duh!" moments when I was looking through some knits in my stash for another project.
So, I stopped what I was doing, Sorry Hollie, your jeans wont be mended till next week...
Well, I got to work with the Silhouette Studio.
I started with a simple Sakura flower.
Do you know what a Sakura flower is?
Cherry Blossom
I made lots and lots of them.  Rotated them. Made them different sizes.
Then arranged them in the shape of shirt bodice piece.
Then followed the easy-peasy instructions on the Heat Transfer Material.
Then I applied it to my fabric piece.

Can I tell you just how FABULOUS this Heat Transfer Material is??
It is AWESOME!
This is not your craft-store will do for 1 wash stuff.
This stuff is in it for the long kid-wearing/washing haul!
It is nearly effortless at being flawless!
I am a huge fan! And can't wait to get more colors!

So, I was nearly ready to take pictures when my sweet Angel told me it didn't sparkle enough.
So, I got the hotfix crystals out.

Have a look at how it turned out!

Then I got inspired and made a matching fascinator:

Thanks Holly for the fun products! I have the best fun with them!

Making It With Allie - Turtles

So, my bestie Hollie and I were chatting before her finals last week.
Then she mentions that she is also supposed to make one of her daughters a turtle costume.
Now, I am not going to go into how I and Hollie and her spouse feel about the parent being required to make costumes... I don't want the wrath of all of you happy bloggin teachers...
Anyways, these 5th graders were having an opera and each student needed a costume.
Costumes have to be made and I love to do it.
People who have a business AND are going to college don't like to make costumes so much.
I also remembered I had the perfect fabric  for her costume so, I could make her a turtle shell and all she had to do was put on some green leggings and a green shirt.
Plus when she told me that the kids actually made the script and all the music,
I was SO impressed, I had to do it!
I have a special place in my heart for opera and opera for kids.

So, I whipped up this turtle shell.
It only took a piece of foam core board, fiber fill, batting, knit fabric, elastic and some embroidery floss

I cut out the turtle shape in the foam core board and then poked holes in a pattern in the middle.
Then I layed the fiber fill down and then a layer of batting, then the knit fabric.
This all got stapled with a regular stapler.
Then I took the embroidery floss and sewed with a very long needle threw my holes up and down through the pattern to create "tufting" for the turtle pattern.
Then on another piece of foam core board in the same shape only slightly smaller, I cut space for elastic to go through (for her arms)
Then covered the whole thing with the knit fabric.
Then the two pieces got sandwiched together with hot glue.
EASY PEASY.
Then I decided that since I had barely missed the closing of the post office for the day,
I could add some reinforcing/decorative stitch around the edge.
It turned out really cute and you know I forgot to take pictures before I dropped it into the mail.
But Hollie was smart enough to bring her camera to the show!
So here is Miss Sophie in her Turtle costume!

IT Art

My Aunt Shelley asked me to make her some art for her new office.
The new place is very modern in tones of gray.
Sounds bright and cheery, eh? Right.
So, she asked me to come up with something within these parameters:
(I love these kind of exercises)
Grays - think Kleenex Box
4 pcs. Green
UP To 4 pcs. Black
1 pc. Yellow
1 pc. Red

And she gave me a canvas to put it on.

So you ask, where is the color scheme coming from?
Well, my Aunt Shelley is a Systems Analyst.
Yea, I am not sure (as I am not one) what she does, but she does it REALLY well.
Anyways, the programs she has to use is in 4 colors:
Black (background) Green (Most of the words)Red and Yellow (Sparingly)
And then the Grays of the office.

So, this is what I came up with:

So, she popped her art up in her office and her co-workers very much appreciated the IT-themed art!
Now she's working on a little floral arrangement to go with it.
I will show it to you all when it's finished!

Making It With Allie - Waiting for The Doctor

Greeting friends!
The weather here has been delightful!
We are on day two of record-breaking warm weather and I LOVE it!
Hope you all have been able to enjoy some nice weather where you are.

Today I am SO excited to share with you this little number my little girl asked me to make for her!
Before I get to showing it, I must share with you a little back-story...

When I was growing up, my father watched this British show called Doctor Who.
This show has been on since 1963!
It is a science-fiction "drama-die" (for lack of a better word) where The Doctor takes an engenue companion on galactic adventures and usually, he ends up saving the world....
Well, over the years, I watched it too.
And when BBC America began airing the newest series of them, I of course watched them too!
Well, the newest series began a few weeks ago and I was speechless when
Lil'A was maybe more excited than I to watch the premier!
It turns out that she LOVES this show!
She LOVES The Doctor!  Especially this latest Doctor...
She asks to watch Doctor Who On-demand as often as she asks for Max & Ruby.
And I am thrilled!

Now, The Doctor travels in this Police Box turned TARDIS.

I can hear you asking: A wha? Just what is a Tar-dis?
Well, let me begin by saying, it sounds better if you put on your best British Accent and say it...
But TARDIS stands for:
Time And Relative Dimension In Space

This means, in a really simplistic way:
It can travel through to any point in time and space.
It is larger on the inside than the outside.
And can blend in to its surroundings.
Basically, for The Doctor, it is his Deluxe-Motor-Home-In-The-Sky
The Tardis has a signature sound that has been featured in the series over the years, which in an episode of late,
River Song explains that the sound is made because The Doctor doesn't take off the brakes upon landing and take off.

So, AuBrynne says to me, "Can you make me a dress with The Doctor's machine on it?"
Being the ambitious sort, I said, "Absolutely!"

And I started out making a template with the Silhouette Studio.
Lots of tiny 4.5mm circles....
Enough for the little Tardis-Blue nail-heads to fall into...
More than 650!
This probably would have been easier with the Rhinestone Template Kit,
but I wasn't willing to wait for the post to do that...
And, nail-heads are not weighted as rhinestones are and it made the whole process pretty tedious.
But the results are FANTASTIC!!!

You want to see what I came up with?

I like this dress SO much, I want to make a "Mommie version"...
What do you think?

Now, before you go saying:
This girl has gone way too geek for me,
check out this  AMAZING Tardis, over at Mateo and Me!

You know there is a certain little 4 year old girl who is asking for one of these in her size...
