Wine Bottle Hummingbird Feeder

We made a hummingbird feeder today! And it was made from a wine bottle!

I cleaned the labels off then began wrapping copper jewelry wire in rings to hold the bottle.
I found a stopper with a hole in it and copper tubing at the local Science and Surplus store.
To bed the copper tubing without crimping it, I stopped one end with my low temp glue gun and added a very soapy solution through a funnel and stuck it in the freezer.
I had to work quickly once I was ready to bend it, because that soapy solution melts fast!  But you have just enough time to get a pretty curve in it.

Then I found a pen at the dollar store that had a mirrored flower rhinestone set on it. I pulled it off and wrapped wire around it to attach it to the bottle.
Then I added the hummingbird nectar (1 part sugar to 4 parts boiled water NO food coloring)
To hang this I took a key ring and threaded it through the crossing of the wires on the top (original bottom) and then looped a copper chain to go around the branch and back to the key ring.

It turned out pretty nice!

Now we wait for the hummingbirds to arrive!

  4. I am going to have to try this hummingbird feeder..I know I have a wine bottle I can donate to the project! I agree with Donna, the best part is the blingy rosette! The copper wire makes it special.

  15. Artanon has a good question. I made one, it's beautiful, but it drips pretty bad....got any solutions?

Can you explain this better....What does the above mean...freezer...soap solution?? I need better instruction please!

    1. I think she meant "to BEND the copper tubing". Maybe the soapy solution is just soapy water to kind of insulate the tube so it doesn't crimp when bending the tubing and it freezes faster and works better than just water?

  17. I, also would like to know how to keep the feeder from dripping.

  18. You can fill the copper tubing with sand while you bend it. Or you can go on Amazon and buy a dozen of the nozzle thingies already made to fit into the bottle for about $15. I'm kinda stuck on how to twist the wires around the bottle so that it is secure but looks nice...mine looks like I got a bunch of fishing line tangled up or something!
